A two-day job fair was organised by the Southern India Mills Association (SIMA), in association with the State Government of Tamil Nadu, in Agartala recently that witnessed the recruitment of 1,635 candidates, including 20 physically challenged candidates, to address the labour shortage issue in the industry.
Nataraj, Chairman of SIMA, was full of praise for the State Government and thanked them for the keenness in the job fair and hiring process.
The association chief further mentioned that job fair was a huge success and the association would like to host such fairs more often in other states as well. Over 4,000 people came to the job fair and eight-member mills of SIMA took part in the job fair.
It is pertinent to highlight here that the Indian state of Tamil Nadu houses 45 per cent of the country’s spinning capacity, 70 per cent of knitted garment manufacturing and 22 per cent of the weaving capacity employing over 60 lakh people.
However, in major manufacturing hubs like Coimbatore, Tripur and Dindigul, the percentage of migrant workers ranges from 30 to 90 per cent and it hampers the productivity of the mills once they move out. Southern India Mills Association (SIMA) quickly reacted to this problem and started hiring people based out of Tripur through their placement cell.
SIMA will soon release the Code of Conduct for employment of migrant workers, to make the system more successful.
