The Tirupur Exporter’s Association (TEA) has asked the Tamil Nadu Government exempt them from the state-wide ban that has been announced on the use of poly bags. TEA has asked that poly bags created or supplied in its garments manufacturing units must be left out of the State Government’s decision.
Raja M Shanmugham, President, TEA said that they are working in a buyer’s market, where the conditions imposed would have to be adhered to strictly. Considering the specific needs of the apparel sector, “We appeal to the concerned authorities to exempt the manufacture and supply of polybags used in clothing units from the plastic ban and help in trouble-free exports as also supply in the domestic market,” he added.
It is pertinent to mention here that, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu recently announced a ban on the usage of use and throw plastics from next year in order to make the state plastic-free and prevent environmental and health problems that it causes to humans, animals as well as plants.
The TEA appreciated the initiative taken by the Tamil Nadu Government’s Environment and Forest Department that issued a notification regarding the ban on plastic all over the state.
However, the trader’s body marked out that in the banned plastics items, across the board all the items including the poly bags which are used for packing clothing to the exports as well as in the domestic markets has also been included which would cause a big impact on the garment manufacturing units.
TEA also warned that because of this decision, the apparel industry would be halted, as they don’t have any other alternative for packing of the garments. Moreover, there will also be a significant effect on downstream activities of the garment sector.
