A boiler exploded in the Bright Sky factory in Por Senchey District, Phnom Penh (Cambodia). The incident occurred on 23rd October. One person suffered injuries during the mishap.
According to Yem Saran, District Police Chief, the cause of the accident is being investigated despite the owners being highly uncooperative with local police.
Saran also asked the Chief of Municipal Police to resort to legal measures to seek compliance.
The Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia (GMAC) reportedly said that apart from the minor injuries to the victim, some assets also got damaged.
GMAC also added that the factory was compliant with all the required safety standards and even the concerned boiler had been tested and cleared by the authorities.
The garment trade association has now strongly appealed to the companies to be extra careful, especially with regard to the safety of boilers. The body is working closely with all stakeholders to ensure a safe environment for workers across all member factories.
There had been a lull since April when similar explosions had injured and killed some garment workers. Therefore, this incident has come as a shocker.
