Chetna Organic, working for fair supply chain with small farmers in Maharashtra, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh for the past nine years is now working with almost 15,279 member farmers, a major increase from just 234 farmers it initiated the project with in 2004. “This season we will take almost 50,000 quintals of organic cotton costing near about Rs.18 crore to the market,” informed Tapan Kumar, Head Operation at Chetna Organic, Hyderabad in conversation with Apparel Online. Out of the total farmers under the project, 94% of them own below 2 hectares of land and come under small and marginal farmer’s category. It is also worth mentioning that 978 Farmer Self Help Groups have been federated into 13 cluster level cooperatives. The turnover of Chetna Organic Agriculture Producer Company Limited (COAPCL) has also increased from Rs. 35 million in 2009 to Rs. 115 in 2011 and profitability from Rs. 3.5 million to Rs. 7 million in the same period. Buyers like Jackpot, Kuyichi, Komodo, Pure Baby, Lebig, Imps & Elfs, M’Braze, Intoxica, Mud Jeans, Edun, etc. are associated with Chetna Organic through the ‘Made-by’ trace and track programme.
