Among global uncertainties and changing geopolitical scenarios, a few Kanpur-based exporters of leather products have witnessed an almost 8-10 per cent growth in the orders that are under production and are also optimistic about the coming season as well.
Kanpur is one of the leading Indian hubs for exports of leather-based products.
Along with the upcoming Christmas season, another main reason for the increase in the business is the effort entrepreneurs are putting in.
“The orders, which are supposed to ship in the next few days for the US market, are 10 per cent more compared to last year. We are expecting the same for orders scheduled for delivery by April-May 2025 since inquiries for the same are also higher this time. Due to the higher inquiries, we are focusing more on sampling,” Shared Mohammed Anas, Director, Meridian Exports, Kanpur.
A few other exporters have also had a similar experience and echoed this increase in orders.
Known for its quality products, Meridian Exports exports leather accessories like belts, bags and wallets to mainly the US market.
The company is also exploring new customers in the US market, specifically those that are primarily into apparel but also adding leather as a new product category.
“In working with such customers, we have less competition compared to full-fledged leather products-based buyers who are already working with suppliers like us,” said Anas.
