In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Chirag Paswan urged him to establish a massive textile park in Bihar’s Bhagalpur, widely known as the Silk City, under the ‘PM Mitra Yojana’ program, as well as in recognition of the city’s large Muslim weavers.
Chirag argued in his letter that adding a historic town like Bhagalpur to the ‘PM Mitra Yojana’ would not only bring the region’s rich historical legacy and modernity together, but it would also give its economy a new direction.
Bhagalpur is a symbol of India’s long and illustrious textile history, he said. For generations, Indian handicrafts have been associated with Bhagalpuri Silk, which is referred to as the “Queen of Fabrics” worldwide. Products made from Bhagalpuri silk are still in high demand in West Asia, Europe, Japan, and other nations, he added, noting that Bhagalpur’s silk business has a direct or indirect relationship with around 50,000 weaver households.
He said that the establishment of a massive textile park in Bhagalpur will boost exports and entrepreneurship, social empowerment, and the creation of a large number of job possibilities.
