At least six workers were killed and seven people wounded, even as several others remained trapped inside, when a fire broke out in a multi-storey garment factory in Zhengzhou City, central China’s Henan Province.
A total of 26 fire engines and 140 firefighters were pressed into action to douse the fire. Witnesses said they heard explosions before the fire broke out. A few media reports also claimed of blasts being heard at the garment factory. The factory was located in Zhengzhou National Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone.

State-run Xinhua news agency reported that six bodies were retrieved by the firefighters during their operation at the building. According to reports, flames engulfed the top floor of a six-storey factory building in the provincial capital Zhengzhou around 1:20 pm. Firefighters managed to douse the flames around 4 pm. Four people had to be hospitalised.
After the fire broke out, screams for help could be heard as workers at the factory ran towards the roof in an effort to escape. However, many got trapped in the dense smoke building up inside the factory. The lack of fire prevention measures at many of these factories has become an increasing concern in recent years.
