The issue of increased GST on garments is continuously being raised by various stakeholders. Just a few days back, Telangana Handlooms and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao had approached the Union Ministry of Textiles and urged not to increase GST on garments.
Now in Tamil Nadu, AIADMK coordinator and the deputy leader of the Opposition O. Panneerselvam has written a letter to Union Minister for Commerce & Industry and Textiles Piyush Goyal in this regard and urged to restore the GST slab rate of 5 per cent.
“Tamil Nadu’s textile industry contributed significantly to the country’s economy. It enabled Central and State Governments to earn revenue besides foreign exchange through exports and it is a forerunner in industrial development and in providing employment,” he said in the letter.
It is worth mentioning here that many trade organisations recently had meetings with the Ministry of Textiles (MoT) and the Ministry of Finance in this regard. All of them have strongly urged not to hike GST on garments.
On a call of the MP Textile Traders’ Federation, the markets and shops related to garments in Indore, a leading apparel manufacturing hub, observed a ‘20-minute blackout’ against the increase in the rates.
Industry stakeholders beat steel plates (thalis) and blew conch shells. Just a few days back, Gandhi Nagar, Delhi had also witnessed huge agitation.
As per reports, MoT is also in favour of higher GST and will approach the GST council.
Trade bodies, garment manufacturers and trades are agitating against the hike across the country, which is going to be effective from 1 January 2022.
