Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that handlooms manifest India’s diversity and the dexterity of countless weavers and artisans and has called for support for the local handloom products.
In a tweet, the Prime Minister said, “Handlooms manifest India’s diversity and the dexterity of countless weavers and artisans. National Handloom Day is an occasion to reiterate support to our weavers by enhancing the spirit of #MyHandloomMyPride. Let us support local handloom products!”
National Handloom day is being celebrated across India today (7th August).
Union Textiles, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said that there is strong need to take handlooms to next level of growth. India has the target to increase the production of handloom from present level of around Rs. 60,000 crore to Rs. 1,25,000 crore in 3 years.
Addressing an event on the occasion of National Handloom Day, he insisted for the efforts to quadruple exports from current Rs. 2,500 crore to Rs. 10,000 crore.
A team is to be constituted under the Chairmanship of Sunil Sethi of Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) consisting of all weavers, trainers, equipment makers, marketing experts and other stakeholders to recommend ways and means to achieve the objective and improve all round progress.
The MoT has the target of making the handloom sector strong and prosper without depending much on State support.
Piyush Goyal also virtually inaugurated design resource centre at Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu and inauguration of building of weavers’ service centre at Raigarh, Chhattisgarh.
