The Bangalore Wholesale Cloth Merchants’ Association (BWCMA) has declared an indefinite halt of all textile commerce with Turkey and Azerbaijan, a significant step that stems from geopolitical concerns. The move is a reflection of the growing apprehension within Indian corporate communities regarding these two nations’ alleged alignment with Pakistan on delicate regional issues.
According to a public statement from the BWCMA, this collective decision was decided following thorough consideration and in accordance with the trade community’s interests, national sentiment, and the dedication to moral business practices. When required, it is crucial to take principled positions as accountable participants in the textile industry, said the statement.
The BWCMA, which represents hundreds of Karnataka textile wholesalers and dealers, said that all of its members have decided to halt all planned or ongoing exports to Turkey and Azerbaijan as well as all current and future purchases of textile products from these nations. Indirect commerce involving textile products coming from or going to Turkey and Azerbaijan through middlemen or other countries will also be avoided by the association.
The trade restriction will stay in place “until further notice,” the statement stressed, and any modifications must be approved by the Association’s governing body. In order to facilitate a seamless transition throughout the boycott, the BWCMA has also called on customs officials, logistical partners, and trade allies to increase their cooperation.
This move comes after similar boycott calls from the the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) and Indian trade associations in Ichalkaranji as well as reported boycotts from Indian e-commerce platforms.
The textile community in Bengaluru took this action in the midst of growing diplomatic tensions between India, Pakistan, and nations perceived to support Islamabad’s position on important issues, most notably Kashmir. Under President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Turkey has often expressed its strong support for Pakistan in international fora, such as the UN.
India has taken note of Turkey’s outspoken support for Pakistan, which has influenced opinions among political parties, business associations, and civil society. Turkey’s close friend Azerbaijan has also been under criticism for its alignment on a number of global forums.
