Efforts of the Indian apparel industry regarding favourable GST continue aggressively!
A delegation of The Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI) met Chief Minister of Karnataka, BS Basavaraj Bommai and made a strong representation on the disastrous consequences of raising GST on textiles and apparels to 12 per cent, and the need to maintain the GST rates on textiles in the lowest merit slab.
Notably, Basavaraj Bommai is also the Chairman of the GOM formed by the GST Council.
The CMhas reacted positively to the presentation made and promised to consider the suggestions very carefully.
He has also asked CMAI to meet him again after submitting some more data which he has sought, so as to enable him to recommend a long-term solution for the industry, whichwill also meet the Government’s objectives.
The Minister stressed that the apparel industry is one of the highest employment-generating industries and he is not just looking at the industry’s survival, but also at encouraging its high growth.
The delegation had Rajesh Masand, President and Rahul Mehta, Chief Mentor CMAI; Kulin Lalbhai of Arvind Group, Ashish Dixit of ABFRL, Sanjay Jain of TT Ltd.; Manu Chatlani of Soch and Prakash Mandoth of Federation of Karnataka Traders Association.
ISN Prasad, Additional Chief Secretary Finance, Karnataka was also present in the meeting and the CMAI delegation was accompanied by Neelesh Hundekar and Ankur Singh of Kearney, a global management consulting firm.
CMAI is working towards gathering this information and will meet the Chief Minister again shortly.
