The garment exporters of Noida, India claim that they have no order to service for at least 2 years as majority of their orders have been cancelled.
Around 500 garment manufacturers of Noida, who export to some of the leading brands like Zara, H&M, Aeropostale, etc., reveal that most of their future shipments and in transit consignments have been cancelled due to the pandemic.
Rajeev Bansal, a leading garment exporter, states that the situation has not only left them with no work for the rest of the year but it would also lead to missing the western Christmas market of 2021 as the sampling and pre production processes happen a year ahead.
He further said that the payments for the previous orders are also withheld by the importers of UK and Europe. Apparel is one of the largest industries in Noida. These manufacturers employ around 50,000 people with 60 per cent of them being women who do tailoring, thread cutting and other works.
Umesh Batra, another Noida-based luxury clothing and accessories exporter, states that they will only be able to cater to the export market in 2022 now. “The kind of clothing and accessories we see overseas has always a fixed clientele but this time no one is interested in Uber-luxury products.
The exporters are also not very much hopeful with the comeback after pandemic as they believe that compliances for export might kick in post pandemic. Also, a lot of workforce has migrated to their home states which would lead to unavailability of the workforce. Besides, payment of the wages would be another issue for these manufacturers.
