Amazon is set to ramp up its presence in India’s fast-growing quick-commerce market, announcing plans to open two new dark stores a day under its Amazon Now service and take the total number of micro-fulfilment centres to more than 300 by the end of the year.
The company said on Monday that it aims to deepen its footprint in Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai as competition intensifies with Flipkart and established quick-commerce players such as Blinkit, Zepto and Instamart. Amazon Now is understood to have around 250 fulfilment centres at present.
According to a statement from Samir Kumar, Country Manager for Amazon India, the company had been encouraged by early customer uptake and had “accelerated its expansion plans”, adding that Amazon expected to “end the year with well over 300 micro-fulfilment centres” and was opening two new sites each day across its three focus cities.
Kumar said the rapid rollout reflected Amazon’s commitment to expanding neighbourhood-level access to fast delivery, noting that the company aimed to meet customers’ expectations on speed and assortment. He stated that Amazon Now would provide “essentials in minutes”, a full grocery range and about 40,000 items within hours, more than one million products on the same day and a further four million the next day.
The planned expansion marks Amazon’s most aggressive push yet into India’s quick-commerce segment, an area that has seen soaring demand as urban consumers increasingly opt for ultra-fast delivery of daily necessities.
