The knitwear capital of the country, Tirupur, has been going through a really tough time, especially for the past two years. Surrounded by difficult times, the knitwear exporters of Tirupur have sought a ‘special status’ and exemption from power cut from the Government. A letter regarding the same was written to the Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, in which
A. Sakthivel, President, Tirupur Exporters’ Association (TEA) specifically mentioned that the power cuts are adding to the delay in executing orders, as the exporters are finding it tough to plan production and delivery schedules, let alone ensuring quality of their orders. The exporters are becoming increasingly worried that if the same continues, they would not only lose out to their competition in the future, but it will also put at stake the future of the exporting units and the livelihood of nearly 5.5 lakh workers employed either directly or indirectly by the exporting community of Tirupur. He further urged the Chief Minister to accord ‘special status to export oriented Tirupur industry immediately’ and ensure uninterrupted power supply with the objective of ensuring the smooth functioning of the export oriented units.
