Tirupur district administration has rescued 19 women from a garment factory of Velampalayam (Tamil Nadu).
These women were allegedly forced to work against their will at this facility. All of whom aged 18 years and above were from Rayagada district in Odisha.
As per the media reports, these women arrived at the factory in December 2020 for a three-month training programme.
They did not get adequate remuneration from the company and were allegedly forced to stay back and work after the training period ended.
A team from Velampalayam police station visited the garment manufacturing unit for inspection and rescued these women. Action will be initiated against the garment company after due investigation.
The women are being provided accommodation at a wedding hall in adherence to the COVID-19 safety protocol and will board a train to Odisha from Tirupur today.
It is also pertinent to mention here that earlier such cases were reported from Jharkhand also.
