On 16 June 2020, Apparel Resources in one of its articles The only solution for immediate availability of labour in North India! had suggested that North India factories must provide dormitory or hostel facilities to the workers along with canteen or proper food services…
Now following this suggestion, Noida Apparel Export Promotion Cluster (NAEC), a prominent body of Noida-based apparel exporters, has taken a similar decision.
As per Lalit Thukral, President of NAEC, the cluster has taken 3,000 flats on rent so that it can offer living facilities to the workers of the garment industry. The numbers will go up depending on how many workers come back. The plan is to use 1 flat for 5 workers.
These flats, situated in Noida’s Sector 122, are being offered to the workers on concessional rates, as the Government is charging Rs. 6,000 per flat.
Offering flats will also help the workers live in hygienic conditions.
Due to the pandemic, workers are not willing to come back from their villages and therefore the industry is also offering other facilities to bring back the workers from their villages be it offering pick and drop facility via company buses, higher wages, over time, etc.
