Inditex, the world’s largest fashion retailer that owns Zara amongst other retail stores, has banned production of angora amidst increasing pressure on retailers from animal rights organizations to cease selling the products. Inditex will join retailers such as Topshop, Marks & Spencer and Primark who have banned the fabric. “We found no evidence of cruel practices at the angora farms of our suppliers. But after consultation with animal welfare organizations to help develop better standards within the industry, we decided that banning angora production was the right decision,” said a statement by the company.
The move will strengthen the company’s policy on animal welfare, which already includes ban on fur, and would further its commitment towards responsible production standards for products with animal origin. Meanwhile, the company’s current stock of angora products will be donated to Syrian refugees in Lebanon.
