The minimum wage in Delhi is now Rs. 16,064 per month (per day Rs. 618) for unskilled workers, Rs. 17,693 (per day Rs. 681) for semi-skilled workers and Rs. 19,473 (per day Rs. 749)for skilled workers.
Notably, this minimum wage is the maximum compared to all other states in India.
What’s noteworthy is that even clerical/non-technical supervisory staff (non-matriculate) will get equal to semi-skilled workers– Rs. 17,693 (per day Rs. 681).
A matriculate, but not graduate, is authorised to get the same wage as a skilled worker. For graduate and above, the minimum wage is Rs. 21,584 (Rs. 815 per day).
In a notice, the labour department of Delhi said that these rates are effective from 1 October 2021 and in case of non-payment of wages fixed for that category/class of work to the employees, the employers should be liable for prosecution and compensation up to 10 times of an amount less paid to the workers.
It is pertinent to mention here that the higher wage in Delhi was one of the main reasons that most of the garment factories shifted from here to nearby hubs like Noida and Gurugram. Even today in Delhi, there are large number of units of trims manufacturers, job-workers, etc.
