By certifying upcyclers, the Ministry of Textiles, through its statutory body, Textiles Committee, has made a major contribution to the advancement of sustainable practices in the Indian textile industry.
The goal of this project is to address the expanding problem of textile waste and encourage upcycling, which is the innovative conversion of waste materials into goods of comparable or better quality.
In order to benefit all facets of society, particularly the numerous women working in the sector at all levels—from entrepreneurs to rural Self-Help Groups—the Ministry is working to persuade the public sector and Government to source upcycled goods.
The Secretary of Textiles introduced a new dashboard that displays a state-by-state list of registered upcyclers and gives access to their certification information in an attempt to raise awareness of the certified upcyclers. This portal gives upcyclers more visibility and recognition while acting as a useful tool for verifying the integrity and authenticity of upcycled goods.
Upcycling’s main advantages were highlighted by Secretary of Textiles Neelam Shami Rao, who also described the Government’s commitment to fostering this industry’s expansion.
