The first textile waste processing facility in Pune will be established by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). According to officials, the program attempts to address the 100-125 tonnes of textile waste produced every day that cannot be handled with ordinary solid garbage.
Sandip Kadam, head of the solid waste management (SWM) department at PMC, explained that the processing unit would handle textile waste in an environmentally friendly way, helping to prevent damage to nature. He also pointed out that many people fail to consider the environmental impact of this waste.
Pune generates 1,200 to 1,300 tonnes of dry waste and 900 to 1,000 tonnes of wet waste daily. The PMC operates 12 biogas plants for wet waste and 13 for dry waste. Of the dry waste, around 100 to 125 tonnes is textile waste.
Officials estimate the cost of the dedicated textile waste processing unit to be between ₹3 to ₹4 crore (US $ 350,000-US $ 466,000), though this may vary depending on land and machinery allocation.
