China is emerging as a larger market for Bangladeshi apparel products as export of the items to the second largest economy is rising fast. In the last fiscal year (FY 2011-12) apparel export to China crossed US $ 100 million, doubling from US $ 52.81 million in FY 2010-11. The apparel export to China was only worth US $ 18.95 million in FY 2009-10.
“In fact some 205 apparel items enjoy zero duty preference in the Chinese market, raising the export volume,” said Siddiqur Rahman, Vice President, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA). He further added that of late China has preferred to produce high-tech and high-end products, making itself dependent on others for low-end and cheap items for its domestic market.
