With an objective to strengthen organisations of the workers and employers in the readymade garment (RMG) sector in Bangladesh, Denmark has recently signed an agreement with the UN’s labour agency, the International Labour Organisation.

Titled “Promoting Social Dialogue and Harmonious Industrial Relations in the RMG Sector”, Denmark’s Ambassador Hanne Fugl Eskjær and Acting Country Director of ILO Gagan Rajbhandari signed the agreement for the project to be jointly funded by Denmark and Sweden, to be implemented by the ILO over the next five years, as per the Danish embassy.
“Denmark believes that fundamental principles and rights at work are promoted best through effective social dialogue,” reportedly maintained Hanne Fugl Eskjær, adding, “I am happy that this project will address needs for both workers and employers leading to a stronger RMG sector in Bangladesh.”
The project aims to contribute to establishing an effective industrial relations framework with a focus on the RMG sector in Bangladesh, reportedly maintained a communiqué from the embassy, adding, “Further, the project will promote sustainable enterprises through social dialogue and strengthen the workers and employers organisations.”

It may be mentioned here that in January this year Denmark launched a programme to train around 280 labour inspectors of Bangladesh to ensure safe working conditions in the garment manufacturing factories of the country.
Inaugurated jointly by Minister for Employment, Denmark, Jørn Neergaard Larsen and Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Bangladesh, Mujibul Haque, the programme that will run for a period of three years, will impart training to a total of 283 labour inspectors. The Danish experts will train these inspectors on five areas – machinery safety, structural safety, chemical safety, accident prevention and ergonomics.
