Germany-based Topp Textile Group developing and supplying functional and fashionable tapes to the garment industry has developed a new seam tape for application in airbag.
This new tape gives stability to predetermined breaking points, pleasant appearance, and elasticity and is already being used by several car manufacturers, in the interiors of the cars for seat seams.
The base tape fabric is woven with polyamide yarn of 100 micro metre diameters. A plastic layer is coated on the tape which provides protection from liquids, dust, foam, etc.
The GSM of the tape is less than 60 and air permeability is less than 10 litre/sq. m, so it can impart the dual functions of stability and sealing without raising weight and thickness of the seam.
The tape is applied usually at the back of the seam to remain in disguise but still perform as predetermined breaking points.
As finer and thinner leather parts are gaining popularity in automobile industry for having lesser weight and higher aesthetic value, this new airbag seam tape will lead to a more pleasant appearance.
Now if the tape is cut into bias (various angle) it results in an elastic function along the seam line without forming wrinkles, especially for the rigid one.
