The Tiruppur Exporters Association (TEA) has urged the Tamil Nadu Government to include affordable worker housing and dormitory-style accommodation as a key priority in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Industrial Policy 2026, saying improved living facilities are essential to address labour shortages and support the region’s export-driven growth.
The proposal was presented during the Textiles Sector Roundtable meeting organised by Guidance Tamil Nadu in Chennai as part of the government’s stakeholder consultations for the new industrial policy.
To improve worker retention, TEA has recommended the development of dormitory-style hostels for unmarried workers and affordable housing for families. The association has also requested that the existing Women’s Hostel at Neruperichal be reassigned to TEA to help accommodate employees working in Tiruppur’s garment manufacturing sector.
Recognising that Tiruppur’s textile industry is largely made up of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), the association proposed setting up dedicated worker accommodation parks in four industrial zones across the district.
Each facility would be designed to house around 25,000 workers, creating accommodation for one lakh workers in the first phase. TEA suggested implementing the project through a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
In addition to housing, the association sought policy support for capital investment in technology upgradation and automation, establishment of a Technical Textiles and Centre of Excellence for Activewear in Tiruppur, higher solar power capacity limits, and green subsidies to strengthen exporters’ global competitiveness.
