To strengthen the state’s economy, the Andhra Pradesh Government has made the decision to support the establishment of textile and apparel factories. It is hoped that the project will bring in US $ 1.17 billion in investments to the textile industry, which may benefit from the abundance of raw materials.
According to textiles and handlooms minister S. Savitha, Andhra Pradesh ranks as the sixth largest cotton producer in India, with a production of 15.41 lakh bales in 2022-23, presenting significant opportunities for value addition within the state. Recent data shows that there are around 106 spinning mills with nearly 3 lakh spindles and 12,635 power loom units currently operating.
Savitha mentioned that the Government plans to establish skilling centers in Vizag and Rayadurg to address industry demands. However, progress has been slow in areas like weaving, knitting, preparatory processes, technical textiles, and integrated units, all of which have considerable potential for value addition and large-scale employment.
The new policy framework aims to boost key areas of the textile value chain, including integrated units and technical textiles. The Government has set up seven textile parks, with five more privately owned. Brandix India Apparel City stands out as a success in Andhra Pradesh and the broader textile sector. The government is also focused on further developing the Venkatagiri and Chirala textile parks, while supporting new private industrial parks.
