The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship’s Skill Council, which was created in collaboration with NSDC, has started training and certifying Kashmiri migrant women at the Jagati camp, Jammu.
The training camp, which was inaugurated by the CEO of the Skill Council Dr Roopak Vasishtha, on March 25, aims to “develop skills repository for apparel value chain, National Occupational Standards in the industry, establish well-structured sector-specific Labour Market Information System as well as improvise the training delivery value chain, including third party assessments and certifications”.
The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India, along with NSDC, had formulated the Apparel, Made-Ups & Home Furnishing Sector Skill Council with an ambitious target of certifying more than 2 million persons in the apparel sector’s Skilling Courses by 2022.
The Council aims to achieve this through the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), under which the youth of the country will be offered training, even while providing certification for the existing workforce in the apparel sector.
The training and certification of Kashmiri migrants at Jammu’s Jagati camp falls under the latter programme, known as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), which was formulated to assess and certify existing manpower of the apparel factories and those having prior knowledge by the Council.
The inaugural function was attended by Moti Kaul, Vice President of the J&K State BJP, who in his address speech, lauded the efforts of the Prime Minister in bringing the government to the masses and thanking the authorities concerned in organising such a programme for the women of the camp.
Under the programme, the women would get a 5-day training in stitching, and would then be assessed and certified under the job role ‘Self Employed Woman-Tailoring’. Efforts would be made to make clusters of such certified women and ultimately connect them with the industry.
