The state government of Uttar Pradesh, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has initiated talks with Indian e-retailer Flipkart to sell Khadi products. A similar move was taken by the state government in February this year as it inked an agreement with India unit of the US based e-commerce mammoth Amazon Inc.
The availability of Khadi products on e-commerce platforms will make it available for global consumers and consequently open international market for Khadi products. “Khadi products will be made available on Flipkart after successful completion of talks with e-retailer,” Principal Secretary, Khadi and Village Industries, Navneet Sehgal was quoted as saying an Indian news agency.
Currently, 10 units are retailing their Khadi products through Amazon.in. The state government is done with photo shoot of around 40 products shortlisted for e-retailing. Under the partnership with Amazon, the rural khadi artisans are imparted training and education on ‘how to sell their products on Amazon.in’.
Khadi shirts, kurtas, dhotis, towels, and gourmet foods, which are the most popular khadi items in the urban areas, are available under the brand on Amazon. It is being said that such kind of tie-up will be advantageous to the khadi manufacturing units, and as for artisans, it will provide them with a bigger retail platform for their products. Goes without saying, this move truly supports the Central Government’s ‘Digital India’ campaign.
In another development, distribution of 400 solar-powered charkhas to registered yarn spinners, to improve efficiency and raise their income, is expected to roll out from October 2.
