
To ensure timely reforms of the existing trade organisations, the Bangladesh government has recently set up a 10-member high-level panel of the country’s leading business personalities, headed by former president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Salman F Rahman.
This was recently conveyed via a circular issued by the Ministry of Commerce.
Its members include Incumbent president of FBCCI Abdul Matlub Ahmad, its first V-P Md Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin and former FBCCI Presidents Mahbubur Rahman, apart from Yussuf Abdullah Harun, Mir Nasir Hossain, Annisul Huq, A K Azad and Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed.

“The recently created committee will submit its report (to the Ministry of Commerce), along with recommendations, within the next three months,” Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce Hedayetullah Al Mamoon told a newspaper recently, adding that necessary steps will be taken with a view to updating the existing trade bodies as per the committee’s recommendations.

According to ministry sources, the Ministry aims to raise FBCCI’s capacity. At present, there are 476 trade organisations under the FBCCI, of which 71 are chambers, 8 women chambers, 20 joint chambers and 377 associations (according to the FBCCI data).
