Shahnawaz Hussain, Industry Minister of State, has said that Bihar will soon announce textile and leather policy. The preparations are underway in this regard.
Addressing a webinar, the minister said that the Union Government has assured full support to the state in this regard. However, the minister didn’t share the dates when this policy would be announced.
Notably, there are hundreds of SME apparel manufacturing units in and around Patna, the capital of the state. Panjipara (Kishanganj) is a leather hub in Bihar, which has good export of leather. A leather processing hub is also planned in the city.
It can be mentioned here that Bihar is one of the leading Indian states as far as local labour availability is concerned. Few years ago, some apparel manufacturers and textile companies were geared up to invest in Bihar but it could not happen.
As of now, there is not even a single well-organised, large-scale apparel manufacturing unit in the state.
Low cost land, labour availability and better connectivity are some of the factors that have attracted investors towards Bihar, but due to lack of proper policies and allied support structure, textile industry could never develop in the state.
