Country’s biggest man-made fabrics (MMF) hub Surat is struggling with fires in its textiles markets. The five major fires in the Surat in the past three months have put a question mark on the business ethics of some of the textile traders here. Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) have asked the police to conduct a detailed investigation into the whole affair of frequent fire accidents in the textile markets and take severe action against the guilty. SMC has started scrutinizing the certificates issued by its fire department in the past few years for insurance claims. Municipal commissioner Milind Torwane said, “Things don’t appear to be normal, how can there be five major incidents of fire in three months in the city when there was none a few months ago.” SMC will take strict action against those textile traders who are found guilty of having indulged in unethical practices and putting others’ lives at risk to cut down on their financial losses.
