India has the ability to bridge the gap created by China’s diminishing market share as Japan’s top supplier of ready-made clothing, the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) announced on Friday.
The council is leading a high-level delegation to Tokyo, it added, to meet with top Japanese retail chains and brands in order to look into ways to increase exports and draw in investments.
The group is scheduled to attend the India Tex Trend Fair, which will take place in Tokyo from 15th-17th July and which will be inaugurated by Union Minister for Textiles, Giriraj Singh. Over 150 Indian clothing exporters will be taking part in the fair to showcase a wide array of their homegrown clothing items.
According to AEPC Chairman Sudhir Sekhri, the council will be sending a high-level delegation to Tokyo to discuss the potential for increased trade and investment by having in-depth conversations with leading Japanese retail chains and brands.
Sekhri added that increased use of the two nations’ free trade agreement has been the outcome of closer involvement with the Japanese market.
He noted that China, the biggest exporter of ready-made garments (RMG) to Japan, is losing market share, leaving a gap that India can readily fill.
In 2024, the nation’s exports of garments to Japan totalled US $ 234.5 million while Japan’s total garment imports, of which India is 1%, totalled US $ 23 billion.
