
Hailing the contributions made by the garment industry in Bangladesh’s growth and development, Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Atiur Rahman underlined that the readymade garments (RMG) sector acts as a catalyst for the economic development of the country by earning billions of dollars as export earnings while also creating jobs for millions of people of the country.

Dr. Rahman made this remark at the recently held seminar on ‘Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Early Childhood Development (ECD) Research in Bangladesh’. He further highlighted that as 85 per cent of the workforce in the readymade garment sector is women, and the RMG factory owners should create and use their CSR funds for the improvement of their workers’ productivity.
Addressing the seminar, Rahman said Bangladesh once termed by cynics a ‘bottomless basket’ has now become a ‘basket full of wonders’. The country with its limited resources but immense human capital potential, has been maintaining 6 per cent plus annual average GDP growth rate for well over a decade.
