Toray Industries (H.K.) Ltd. has entered into a joint venture with South Asia’s largest apparel manufacturer, MAS Holdings, in a move aimed at strengthening supply chain capabilities and expanding product manufacturing for the fast-growing Indian market.
The new entity, Toray MAS Apparel India, will establish its operations at the MAS Apparel Park in Bhuinpur, Odisha, which is currently under development. The groundbreaking for the Apparel Park took place in March 2025, with operations scheduled to commence in early 2026. The facility is intended to serve both existing and potential customers in the region, catering to the rising demand for high-quality, innovative textile solutions.
The partnership was formalised in June at MAS Holdings’ Head Office in Colombo, with Teruo Funahashi, Managing Director of Toray Hong Kong, and Suren Fernando, Group Chief Executive Officer of MAS Holdings, representing the two companies at the signing ceremony.
According to Teruo Funahashi, Toray MAS Apparel India would contribute to local employment and economic growth by manufacturing advanced, high-quality offerings. He added that the new company would serve as a strategic garment hub in India for both Toray and MAS Holdings, while reinforcing their partnership through the deployment of strategies that leverage their respective strengths.
Suren Fernando described the joint venture as an important step in strengthening MAS Holdings’ global supply network and deepening its collaboration with Toray Industries. He noted that the Odisha facility would play a key role in supporting customers’ evolving requirements, driving innovation and contributing to regional economic development. Fernando further emphasised that, in the current global economic climate, strategic partnerships such as this were essential to enhancing capabilities and delivering value-added solutions to customers.
The collaboration combines MAS Holdings’ established expertise in apparel manufacturing with Toray Industries’ advanced material technologies. Together, the partners aim to deliver innovative products to leading global brands while contributing to economic growth and job creation in Odisha.
The upcoming facility is being designed with sustainability at its core. Planned features include renewable energy systems such as rooftop solar photovoltaics, energy-efficient technologies, and advanced water and wastewater management systems. Universal accessibility will also be ensured, while environmentally responsible practices in waste and chemical management will be integrated, aligning operations with both environmental stewardship and social responsibility.
