
M K Muneer, Minister for Social Justice has launched ‘Vastra Mandalam’ scheme at Vattampoyil Grand Auditorium, Calicut, India. The scheme offers training to women in apparel designing.
Two apparel designing units and one mother satellite unit were also opened. These units will employ around 60 women who have already been trained by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Kannur.
The project aims to introduce Kudumbashree brand apparel in the market. Under the plan, readymade garment manufacturers will supply material to women at the two units here who will stich garments based on their requirements. Besides, button stitching units and more garmenting facilities will be set up in Kozhikode south constituency under the scheme. More women will be trained at NIFT to work at these units.

“Once women complete their training and they prove their capability in producing good quality apparel we will also brand our product,” said the coordinator, adding, “Branding will also increase chances for exporting locally produced garments.” The project aims to make members of Kudumbashree units, who are trained in tailoring, experts in dress designing and embroidery works, train them better, give them exposure and give a regular source of income.
The project is not only centred at launching Kudumbashree brand apparel, it is also focusing at employing trained women workforce in the industry.
