Preppy university sweaters have become essential to the durable preppy trend in fashion, maintaining relevance across seasons. Each year, these iconic garments are reimagined through various house styles, ensuring their continued presence and evolution in the contemporary style domain.
In fashion, the ‘preppy’ aesthetic look has long been synonymous with brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren, but over the years, its popularity has catapulted and slowly trickled down and influenced a broader range of luxury brands that now incorporate their unique interpretations of the style.
The trend for preppy attire continued on the Fall/Winter 2024 runways, building a dominant presence that has kept it consistently relevant in recent years. Amongst the defining elements of this season’s trend has been the university/college sweater, a cornerstone of the preppy wardrobe featured in numerous designer collections.
Easily identifiable by bold typefaces that reference specific institutions and associated coats of arms, brands often integrate these elements into their own aesthetic. This allows for a seamless fusion of classic collegiate design with brand logos and typefaces, creating a cohesive look within their lines.
The runways saw many designers and brands reinterpret this trend for the upcoming season. Amongst them was Coach, which was seen embracing a nostalgic ’90s vibe by presenting a velour version of its Spring/Summer 2024 ensemble. LaPointe opted for a classic approach with a hoodie featuring traditional colours and prominently displaying ‘New York’ alongside its brand name, whilst Wales Bonner offered variations including long-sleeve and vest cuts adorned with classic typography embroidery. Rhude also showcased a unique take, incorporating a coat of arms peeking out from under an Oxford-style blazer in its design iteration.
