The sheer fashion trend has completed its runway-to-street transition.
What appeared as a high-concept editorial choice at major fashion week shows now reads as a considered everyday wardrobe strategy. The shift reflects a genuine evolution in how transparency functions on the dressed body, from exposure as statement to layering as daily practice.
On the global runway, luxury houses have continued to push sheer dressing in sophisticated new directions. Saint Laurent’s Spring/Summer 2026 menswear collection paired sharply structured silhouettes with translucent silk-and-nylon overlays, creating an airy, fluid effect
Valentino’s Spring 2026 Ready-to-Wear collection used layers of organza to build depth and colour variation, treating transparency as a design tool rather than mere exposure.
Prada embraced the trend through embellished sheer layering, while Bottega Veneta’s fluid draping and Alaïa’s sculptural organza constructions further reinforced the growing appeal of transparency in fashion.
In India, organza, tissue, and net have always existed in the couture vocabulary, and currently, it reigns as a top ethnic trend of 2026. Falguni Shane Peacock deploys organza for lehengas like Beige Tulle Foil Lehenga Set and Champagne Gold Hand Embroidered Lehenga Set.
Gaurav Gupta, on the other hand, layers chiffon and nylon blends into futuristic couture silhouettes. Taupe Net & Brocade Pleated Lehenga-Sheer Cape Set and the Blue Rayon Georgette Ruffled-Drape Concept Sari are such examples.
Similarly, Tarun Tahiliani treats sheer as structure, with Ivory Tulle, Net, Chiffon Pearls, Stones Ombre Pre-draped Saree And Blouse Set and Ivory Hand Embroidered Applique Sheer Top.
Although the trend mainly dominates occasionwear in India, it is slowly establishing its place in contemporary fashion as well. Traditionally, fabrics such as organza and net were used sparingly to create transparent sleeves, detachable capes, or decorative elements like floral appliqués and tulle fringe. Today however, brands like The LittleBox India and NewMe are using sheer as the main fabric rather than a part of the garment, as seen in products like Floral and Leaf Printed Sheer Mini Dress and Dark Brown Ruched Maxi Dress respectively, signalling a more mainstream adoption of the trend.
The sheer trend is expected to evolve even further, as designers are now experimenting with a wider range of transparent textures, from delicate meshes to structured organzas, while layering techniques become increasingly refined and sophisticated.
