As per two individuals with knowledge of the matter, the Union Textiles Ministry is preparing to introduce an updated Cotton Technology Mission with the objective of enhancing the calibre and productivity of India’s “white gold” through the adoption of optimal methodologies that could establish India as a leading location for textile procurement and foreign investment.
It is intended to raise the incomes of over 6 million cotton farmers in India and lessen reliance on imports of this essential raw material for fibre, according to the statement.
According to one of the two individuals mentioned above, the project’s funding distribution and other policy frameworks would be finalised within the first 100 days of the incoming government. The project is scheduled to run for five years starting in 2024.
India doesn’t have enough high-quality cotton (900,000 bales), thus it imports 500,000 bales. But with this proposed mission, the government has set an ambitious goal to drastically cut these imports by 2030.
In the upcoming months, the ministry intends to organise stakeholder discussions. Now that a model code of conduct has been established, the administration hopes to use this time to wrap up negotiations and provide a draft framework for policy.
In collaboration with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), the Cotton Association of India, and several ginner groups around the nation, the Textiles Ministry will introduce the redesigned cotton technology mission.
The goal of the policy is to implement innovative technology that will lower the amount of trash present, lower contamination levels, and allow for real-time sample testing. By employing high-quality seeds, optimal agricultural methods, and a high-density planting plan, the planned mission will increase cotton production.
