Executives familiar of the situation claimed that the Centre has requested that Amazon and Flipkart open storefronts for the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) on their home pages in order to aid with delivery and help the government-backed network grow. According to them, the goal is to improve order efficiencies and operations while also fixing ONDC’s kinks and delays.
This is a big deal because ONDC, which launched in January of last year, was positioned as an attempt to challenge Amazon and Flipkart’s hegemony.
Amazon had stated in February of last year that it will be integrating its SmartCommerce services and logistics network, which includes pickup and delivery, with ONDC. Amazon’s software solution called SmartCommerce helps Indian small and medium-sized enterprises develop and expand their online presence.
According to Amazon, these small firms can now utilise it to sign up for the ONDC network. At that time, Flipkart’s logistics division, Ekart, was integrating ONDC at a sophisticated level. Flipkart’s logistics division had already signed up for the network.
Users of the US e-commerce behemoth would be able to view product catalogues of over 105,000 non-mobility businesses that are currently live on the government-backed network if Amazon’s main marketplace is integrated with ONDC. Smaller players can join the network more easily and avoid having to individually onboard Amazon and pay a large commission.
