Minister of Food and Consumer Affairs Pralhad Joshi announced a number of measures to improve consumer protection, such as a helpline powered by AI and instruments to identify dishonest advertising tactics. Meanwhile, prominent e-commerce companies promised to improve the security of online purchases.
As the government launched new consumer protection initiatives including the AI-enabled National Consumer Helpline, e-maap portal, and Jago Grahak Jago mobile application, prominent platforms like Reliance Retail, Tata Sons, and Zomato adopted a safety pledge.
The minister emphasised that 6,587 of the 3,628 cases that were submitted with the National Commission between January and November of this year were resolved at the district, state, and federal levels of the nation’s three-tier consumer court system.
In states including Karnataka, Punjab, and Rajasthan, as well as a number of districts, the government’s e-Daakhil Portal, which was introduced in 2020 and made available nationwide in June 2023, has attained 100 per cent acceptance for online complaint submission.
He noted that 13 businesses have received notices for violating current regulations, and the Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) is creating new guidelines to control surrogate advertising.
