Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay laid the foundation stone for a Rs 1,700 crore Adidas footwear manufacturing facility in Karur.
The manufacturing facility will be established by Evervan Kothari Global Footwear, a unit of Phoenix Kothari Footwear, and will span over one million sq. ft. with an annual production capacity of 40 million pairs of shoes.
Phoenix Kothari Footwear is a joint venture between Chennai-based Kothari Industrial Corporation Ltd (KICL) and Taiwan’s Evervan Group. The company already exports Crocs footwear from its Perambalur manufacturing unit, where it has invested around Rs 5,000 crore.
The development comes as global non-leather footwear brands, including Adidas, Nike, Puma, Crocs, New Balance and Reebok, continue to increase sourcing from Tamil Nadu.
The project, which will generate employment for around 13,500 people, marks the Chief Minister’s first industry-related event outside Chennai since assuming office in May.
According to Phoenix Kothari Footwear Chairman J. Rafiq Ahmed, the first phase of the Karur facility will be completed within six months, while all phases are expected to be commissioned over the next three years.
The products manufactured at the Karur plant will cater to both domestic and international markets.
The facility will be developed by Phoenix Kothari Infrastructure Development (PKID), a subsidiary of the Phoenix Kothari Group.
Ahmed noted that PKID will construct the factory to international standards, drawing on its experience in developing the JR One Kothari Footwear factory at Perambalur. The company will also lead the development of future manufacturing projects, including footwear parks.
