Business leaders and economists claim that Punjab’s thriving garment sector is suffering major losses as a result of the ongoing farmers’ demonstrations, which have caused disruptions to the state’s road and rail networks.
Garment merchants from all across the nation gather in Ludhiana, a well-known industrial centre, in May each year to book orders.
Usually within 24 to 48 hours, this yearly “buyer-seller meet” generates business inquiries for local manufacturers valued over Rs. 500 crore (about US $ 65 million). However, several traders have decided not to visit Ludhiana this year due to the interruptions caused by the protests.
As a result, manufacturers are being forced to showcase their products in Chandigarh and Delhi to secure orders for the upcoming winter season.
