After working in a Surat-based garment factory, Khalilujma of Sitamarhi (Bihar) recently came back to his home town. Earlier he was worried about his job but now he is happy as he may soon get a job in his hometown.
It is not just about Khalilujma!
Same is the story of hundreds of workers and supervisors who belong to Bihar, but were forced to work in other established garment manufacturing hubs across the country.
Bihar Government did a skill survey of around 29,000 workers in Sitamarhi district and the survey distinctly brought out that most of them have skills related to garment manufacturing like stitching, embroidery, etc.
Overall, the state has identified around 1.5 million workers who used to work in various industries across India and have now come back to Bihar. Out of these, more than 62,000 have been identified as tailors.
In recent months, lot of reverse migration has taken place in some states of India and Bihar has also witnessed the same in a big way.
As there are still not many big or organised garment factories in Bihar, these workers will work through cluster schemes and in small-scale units of the state.
Various Government officials of Bihar are having meetings with such workers who have returned from various states and now wish to work in Bihar – mainly near their villages or towns. District level counselling centres are also being set up for the ease of workers.
Abhilasha Kumari Sharma, District Magistrate, Sitamarhi, says “We are ensuring employment for all workers through various schemes like cluster scheme and other various schemes of State Government.”
It is pertinent to mention here that recently Chief Minister Nitish Kumar told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Bihar is the ideal place to invest in areas like garment manufacturing, textile, leather goods, and we are willing to offer all kinds of help to the investors. If the Central Government helps bring industries in Bihar, then the State Government is ready to make 1,000 acre of land available for the purpose without any delay.
