During his two days of touring textile mills in the area, State Handlooms and Textiles Minister R Gandhi stopped by Madura Coats in the city on Tuesday and spoke with the management.
Official sources claim that the Minister and senior officials from the department of handlooms and textiles received a briefing on the technological innovations and best practices used by private mills to increase their productivity. The management of Madura Coats established a number of labour plans, which were also discussed at the conference.
As part of his two-day visit to the area, the Minister spent Monday visiting the cooperative spinning mill in the Theni district. After examining the cooperative spinning mills at Achankulam in the Ramanathapuram district, he travelled to Madura Coats in Madurai on Tuesday morning.
Gandhi told reporters in Achankulam that Rs. 1.15 crore (US $ 136,000) was approved at the assembly session on 28th March for the purchase and upkeep of equipment for the Achankulam cooperative mills.
In order to provide employment for the Adi Dravidar community, the Achankulam mills were established in 1982. For Rs. 30 crore (US $ 3.54 million), the mill underwent three stages of modernisation. According to the ministry, it generated 1,170 metric tonnes of yarn in 2024–2025, valued at Rs. 35 crore (US $ 4.14 million).
Madurai is also home to a state-of-the-art Sustainability Hub opened by Coats, a world leader in thread manufacturing and structural components for apparel and footwear. A US $10 million investment is planned over the next five years to scale up the development of green technologies and materials to accelerate the achievement of Coats’ ambitious sustainability targets, including the company’s hub, a spinning and twisting pilot plant in Madurai to further advance its sustainability commitment.
