Retailers and online marketplaces in India are gearing up for the festive season so that they’re able to make up for lost sales in the previous months of lockdowns.
Expecting a strong demand this season, Amazon has announced that it is expanding its logistics by adding five sort centres and increasing the capacity of the eight existing centres to increase the speed of delivery.
Amazon India will set up the five sort centres in Vishakhapatnam, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Farukhnagar and Ahmedabad, according to the Press Trust of India. This new plan will bring Amazon’s overall sortation area in India up to 2.2 million square feet along with creating several job opportunities.
The sort centres are in place to segregate packages before they are shipped to respective delivery stations and the sortation is based on the location and mode of transport to be used for a particular package.
As part of Amazon’s logistics network, these centres use a mix of automation and labour to increase the speed of transporting packages from sellers in different parts of the country to customers.
“By expanding and investing in logistics and sort centre network, we are positioned to ensure continued customer and seller delight, ahead of the upcoming festive season. This expansion will help create hundreds of opportunities for youngsters and ancillary industries during this time of economic downturn,” Amazon India (Amazon Transportation Services) Director Abhinav Singh said.
