The Central Government is set to roll out the Bhavantar Bhugtan Yojana on a pilot basis next month in Adilabad, Telangana. The scheme aims to provide financial support to cotton farmers when market prices fall below the Minimum Support Price (MSP).
This decision follows a recent committee meeting led by NITI Aayog member Ramesh Chand, which included representatives from the agricultural sector, State Governments, and growers. Adilabad was chosen for the pilot due to its well-maintained online records of farmers, essential for effective implementation.
Officials have stated that the scheme will undergo thorough testing to address potential challenges, as the majority of farmers have already sold their cotton crops harvested since October. The Bhavantar Bhugtan Yojana, previously promised to cotton and soybean farmers before the Maharashtra assembly elections, seeks to mitigate losses amid consistently low prices during the Kharif season.
The initiative demonstrates the Government’s commitment to bolstering farmer incomes and stabilizing agricultural markets, with the pilot project serving as a critical step toward nationwide implementation.
