E-commerce giants in India have agreed to prominently display ‘country of origin’ on all products that will be sold henceforth.
The decision comes amidst the rising border tensions between India and China, and labeling the country is a way to single out products that are made in China.
Among the list of platforms that have agreed are Amazon, Walmart-led Flipkart and Facebook-backed Jio Platforms.
These e-commerce giants will compel all vendors to adhere to the move, although it is unclear when the country of origin will start being displayed, as they have asked for more time to equip themselves for the change.
Online retailers have also requested for a 4-5 month window to fully comply with the requirement aimed at curbing Chinese imports.
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) called for a video conference with online retailers of India asking them to mention the percentage of Indian content in products along with the labeling.
This decision will also further the cause for the Make in India and AtmaNirbhar Bharat movements.
Other retailers who were part of the meeting were Snapdeal, Swiggy, Zomato, Udaan, Tata Cliq, Grofers, etc.
