Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications, Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, has pledged support to the textile industry in Guntur, addressing key challenges and promising to advocate for a 50 per cent subsidy under the Central Government’s schemes. The Minister, accompanied by MP Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu and MLA Prathipati Pullarao, visited the Gopalavaripalem textile park in Palnadu district to assess its current state and explore revitalisation measures.
Highlighting ongoing operations in ginning, spinning, and fabric production, the Minister stressed the need to enhance output and generate employment. He revealed that the park is operating at 50 per cent capacity, underscoring the urgency of boosting participation through subsidies.
Acknowledging concerns from local cotton farmers, Chandra Sekhar highlighted the importance of improving irrigation, quality seeds, and fertilisers to enhance crop yields. This, he noted, would ensure better raw material supply for the textile sector.
The textile park, launched in 2014 as part of a nationwide initiative, was designed to house 61 units and create 6,000 jobs. However, only nine units are operational, employing 400 workers. Stakeholders remain hopeful that the proposed subsidies and improved farming support will accelerate the park’s growth and realise its full potential.
