
Setting up of a 17-man committee, is part of the Presidential decision taken during the recent meeting of the top officials of the Ministry, which will address the challenges that’s ailing the nation’s textile industry.
It is a part of administration’s economic diversification programme which aims at the revival of country’s productive sector. The committee will identify the current constraints, challenges of cotton, textile and garment sub-sector and offer practical solutions to the challenges, among others. The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Sonny Echono, lamented that cotton, textile and garments industries across the country have become difficult due to influx of cheap textile materials, and other reasons. The country has seen big fall in the employment in textile industry. Out of the 51 ginneries across the country, only 22 are fully operational, with ginning capacity utilization of 30 per cent.
