Sustainability is today the bigger and wider plank on which the industry works and progresses, especially when we have hundreds and thousands of people working in our factories. Is the concern only to pay them as per the norms or provide hygiene working conditions within the premises of the factories as a compliance stipulation… Does this not include the surroundings? Is it not important to look at our workers, beyond the factory place… Are we concerned about the plight of workers as to how many times they have fallen sick and lost their wages just because of these pathetic surroundings? The industry too suffers as they are forced to hire another/untrained workers in lieu of him. Is it not the responsibility of NGOs or the associations working for the betterment of workers/industry to also look at the areas adjoining the industry?
We visited various industry sites to bring out the reality of these industrial areas…, note that this is before the rains, and the situation can go worse during the monsoons…

In this new series, we will not only present the negative and unhygienic conditions, but also show benchmark factories/areas that can be examples for others to follow. If you have come to know of any such bottleneck or benchmark, please contribute and help us to improve conditions in-and-around your factories…
The Government has changed and new Government has come to power with a thumping majority; there is expectation of ‘Good Days Ahead’. But will the conditions really change or will they remain the same, since we are used to tolerating many things, which when seen objectively, need to change like infrastructure… The pictures of a few industrial areas of Delhi describe eloquently the pathetic state in which the industry is forced to work in.
Permanent solutions for basic necessities like road, hygiene, cleanliness seems next to impossible here… Can we expect CHANGE now?

1. Unhygienic conditions Mayapuri Industrial Area, Phase 1
Unhygienic conditions close to Richa Global Exports, (A-41) – mosquitoes breed in the sludge created by nearby factory’s extracts. This is the area where at least 500 persons working here spend their lunch time… Do they not deserve clean, hygienic roads!
2. Are we not responsible? Lawrence Road Industrial Area
Just see the condition of the building which is a washing unit in Lawrence Road Industrial Area… Along with the Government, the local bodies, the administration, and the industry, are we also not responsible for such poor conditions!

3. Some improvements after a long wait Naraina Industrial Area, Phase 2
Though the conditions are not different or even up to a satisfactory level in Naraina Industrial Area, but finally some work is in progress…
Three buildings – Pearl Academy of Fashion, office of Naraina Industrial Association and unit of Diwan Saheb Fashion, are within a radius of 30 metres from this place.
4. Potholes! There is no road Mayapuri Industrial Area, Phase 1

Even though two factories – Richa & Co. (B-108) and Gaurav International Clothing (B-65) are opposite to each other, but poor condition of roads could not be repaired from last many years.
Persons familiar with the area are unable to tell when they last saw a proper road in the area. Isn’t it a problem for all!
5. No road, but debris Mangolpuri Industrial Area, Phase 2
Corner side factory of Trends Setter International (A-24) has nothing in the name of road on its front side while on the other side, though road is good but huge debris is enough to create problems especially during the rain, open drainage along the factory on the same side is source of unhygienic conditions.

6. Discharging chemicals waste on road… Lawrence Road Industrial Area
This picture speaks for itself… Apparel Online confirmed that the blueness is because of drainage from jeans washing units which are in a row in G-block at Lawrence Road… to hell with all rules & regulations!
