
Sweden-based global furniture giant IKEA has acquired a commercial land in Gurugram (Haryana) near the national capital of India, New Delhi.
The furniture retailer sealed the acquisition deal by paying around Rs. 842 crores to Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA).
IKEA, a multinational group that designs and sells ready-to-assemble furniture, grabbed this deal after the 10-acre land located in Sector 47 of Estate-II of HUDA Gurugram was put for re-auction by the authority on October 6. IKEA bid for this land on October 31.
The company is all prepared for its India venture in February next year. It has already set up the first store in Hyderabad which is expected to open doors next year while Mumbai will house the second. Location for the Bengaluru store has also been finalised.
In another development, the furniture retailer’s philanthropic arm, the IKEA Foundation has partnered with UN Development Programme (UNDP) and India Development Foundation (IDF).
Under the partnership, a skill-development pilot programme DISHA has been initiated in Telangana for the skill development of women workers for the retail sector.
Around half of the trained women will be given an opportunity to work at IKEA Hyderabad store. The store will employ 800 direct co-workers and another 1,500 indirectly for other services.
